San Leandro in California Bans Medical Marijuana Dispensaries for One Year

After several motions failed, the City Council has agreed on a one-year ban on medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation facilities.

Vice Mayor Michael Gregory called the one-year prohibition approved Mondaya compromise. "We have a polarized council on this issue. This not what some of us on one side wanted, and it's not what others on the other side wanted," he said.

The interim measure allows the city to see what the state and federal governments and other cities do about regulating medical marijuana dispensaries in the coming months.

San Leandro has a moratorium on dispensaries and cultivation set to expire at the end of September. On a 6-1 vote, the council on Monday asked the staff to draft an ordinance prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries until June 30, 2013, with Councilman Jim Prola voting against.
