Medfield Massachusetts BOS Chair Kills Motion to Oppose Medical Marijuana

Sparks flew at Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting when chairwoman Ann Thompson vetoed colleague Osler “Pete” Peterson’s motion calling for an official statement opposing next month’s ballot initiative authorizing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

“I don’t feel it’s appropriate for the Board of Selectmen to take a position on a statewide issue,” Thompson said, after refusing to second Peterson’s motion and so effectively killing the bill.

With Mark Fisher absent, any decision made by the board needed to be agreed to by both of its remaining members, Thompson and Peterson.

Peterson’s motion read, “The Town of Medfield opposes passage of the initiative ballot question #3, authorizing medical marijuana, because medical marijuana would be too dangerous to Medfield’s young people.”
