It depends how sensitively the tests are calibrated. Usually they are calibrated to test for use in the past month. Chance encounters with sidestream (aka second-hand) smoke are not detected. Hair tests, which don't seem to be very reliable, can detect a longer period of time if you are sporting long locks.
