Germany's fourth annual Cannabusiness trade show, held in the fair hall of Hennef-Sieg near Cologne, was another massive celebration of the innovative, persistent and commercial spirit within cannabis culture.
For each of the past four years, between 120 and 175 merchants and innovators have exhibited their wares at Cannabusiness. About half of these are German, half international.

Church of the Universe challenge

Reverend Brothers Tucker and Baldasaro, of the Church of the Universe's Tetrahedron High Council are pressing forward with their demands that the sacramental use of marijuana be recognized as a valid religious act, protected under the Canadian Constitution. On November 1, the Federal Court of Canada will convene for an oral hearing of the crown's second motion to dismiss the Church of the Universe's plea for legal sacramental marijuana.

Doors closed on Tarzan's Hemp

Tarzan's Hemp, owned by Mike Ethier in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, closed on September 30 when Ethier was evicted by his landlord. The eviction comes in the wake of a series of harassments by the city, the police, Ethier's landlords and some local war veterans that already saw him change his store's location once. Local vets believed that the Canadian flags flying outside of Ethier's store, which have a marijuana leaf at their centre instead of a maple leaf, were a "desecration."

Dutch forbid drying 'shrooms

A Dutch court has ruled that although growing magic mushrooms is legal, drying them is against the law. On October 7, the Den Bosch city court sentenced five accused of processing and trading in dried mushrooms to community service.

Over 50,000 Germans took part in Berlin's third annual Hemp Parade on August 28. Thirty floats paraded from Berlin's central Alexanderplatz square to the Brandenburg Gate, where organizers presented information stands and hemp products.

On November 12, Vancouver Police Constable Gil Puder died of cancer.
Gil Puder was a police officer who spoke out openly, publicly, and loudly against drug prohibition. He decried the police corruption and attitudes spawned by the drug war, and his articles and letters showed up regularly in Vancouver and North American newspapers.

Grow easy in Vancouver

On October 4 the Vancouver Sun newspaper revealed that growing marijuana in Vancouver is a fairly low-risk enterprise compared to many other cities.They analyzed the cases of 112 people charged with growing pot, dating from 1996. They found that about 13% of those charged with growing went to jail, while 17% got probation or conditional discharge, 34% got a fine, and 36% got off altogether.

Jesse Ventura writes to Clinton

Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura sent a letter to President Clinton on September 30, explaining his plans to implement the state's pro-hemp legislation passed this spring.
"Given the success we have seen in Canada and the continuing economic challenges Minnesota farmers face, I am anxious to move forward," wrote Ventura.

Kirk and Stackelberg tackle multimedia

Ken Kirk and Amy von Stackelberg, medical marijuana users, will continue their second constitutional challenge of Canada's marijuana laws March 27 to April 4 of 2000. The challenge is the result of charges resulting from an unnecessarily violent police raid on their Edmonton home on January 20, 1998 (see CC#14, Forgery of justice).
In the meantime, the couple are producing a radio show for CJSR in Edmonton, and are working on pot-legalization video documentaries.

Lakota hemp homes

Since 1997, the Lakota Sioux at Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota have passed multiple pro-hemp resolutions and declarations.This year, the tribe sowed about two acres by an already growing field of wild hemp. Since Native reservations are considered as independent nations for many purposes, the DEA has made no official reaction.
The Lakota tribe is also receiving $5 million from US feds, to replace two dozen homes recently destroyed by tornadoes. They intend to use part of that money for hemp-based buildings.

Mail-order canna-cookies

Australia's New South Wales Compassion Club was officially launched on October 15, announcing it will sell cannabis cookies by mail-order to those in medical need. In an interview with Cannabis Culture, NSW Compassion Club manager Graeme Dunstan described how the club was ceremonially opened with the release of a white dove.

Maine for marijuana

On Novermber 2, Maine voters legalized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Ballot Question 2 asked "Do you want to allow patients with specific illnesses to grow and use small amounts of marijuana for treatment, as long as such use is approved by a doctor?"

Marinol rescheduled

In July, the DEA moved Marinol to Schedule III, which made it easier for doctors to prescribe and for patients to get refills. Marinol is a brand name for synthetic THC, trademarked by Unimed Pharmaceuticals, and marketed by Roxane Laboratories.
The generic name of synthetic THC is Dronabinol. Dronabinol remains on Schedule I as a drug with "high potential for abuse," even though it is exactly the same as Marinol, except that Marinol is in a sesame oil capsule.

More church members harassed

Two other members of the Church of the Universe, Brothers Dan Sweeney and Sol Southcott, have also been harassed by police. It was January 1, 1999 and the two were walking home from their place of employment, the Sacred Earth & Fetish Tattoo Shop in Barrie, Ontario, when a police car stopped them.
Two officers sprang from the vehicle and began firing questions at the two church brothers.

MS sufferer busted again

Grant Krieger, a veteran marijuana activist who treats his Multiple Sclerosis with cannabis (see CC#16, The long harm of the law), was arrested again on August 25 for growing marijuana for Calgary's Universal Compassion Club, which he co-founded.

Nicaraguan nightmare continues

Dr Paul Wylie, the Canadian botanist arrested by Nicaraguan authorities for his involvement in hemp cultivation, remains in prison.
Wylie was employed by Canadian company Hemp Agro, and last December he was tending their authorized industrial hemp plantation near Managua, Nicaragua, when armed government agents arrested him and destroyed the hemp fields.

Bolstered by a THC report from a DEA agent, the Nicaraguan government accused Hemp Agro and Wylie of growing marijuana instead of hemp.
