We received dozens of entries in our absinthe give-away contest. Many folks about to re-unite with old friends hoped to do so over a bottle of the green liqueur. Others were pot-activists, hoping to celebrate court victories of assuage their defeats. It was a difficult choice, until a poetic missive arrived from the Green Fairy herself, delivered by the half-fairy Lana. It seemed that we had little choice but to return the bottle to the Elven court, and thereby receive the blessing of Fairy magic.

CGP facing problems

Consolidated Growers and Processors (CGP) is facing difficult times and possible bankruptcy. In April 1999 the US company contracted farmers in Dauphin, Manitoba, to grow many acres of hemp for seed. Yet now CGP is $6 million behind on promised payments to farmers, who have stockpiles of unsold seed.
Supporters say CGP is being harassed by the provincial securities commission, faces an unexpectedly large GST bill, and uncertainty about hempseed's ability to cross the US border. Reports indicate most farmers are confident they will still sell their seed for a good price.

Complaints Commission listens to Scott

US Drug Czar General Barry McCaffrey spoke at a Los Angeles drug policy conference March 3. He said most medical use of marijuana was "a crock," adding "ask a doctor if he really wants a big blunt stuck in a patient's face."

Drunken pigs trash grow-house

Six Vancouver BC cops got in trouble in January for trashing a grow-house.
After arresting the owner, cops drank his liquor and trashed his home.

The officers, all women, claimed in court that the home was already wrecked, but they drunkenly left behind their camera, with self-incriminating photos.

GARDEN OF THE MONTH?
This is my first garden. It measures 2.5 x 4.5 feet and was lit by a 430 SON-T-GROW light. Cuttings were supplied by my grow teacher. I put in 8 plants every two weeks, which resulted in constant bud. I've since moved and now have a larger garden, thanks to Mr. Emery and Willy Jack Seed Co.

Feds claim hemp is lame

A January US Department of Agriculture report claimed that there is only a small market for hemp in the US, and that all of America's hemp needs could be produced on less than 2000 acres.
Meanwhile, 35,000 acres of hemp were grown last year in Canada, most of it aimed for export into the US.

Britain has had a long relationship with the cannabis plant. For many centuries, English farmers grew cannabis as hemp. They exported hemp agriculture to North America in the 1600's. English doctors prescribed medicinal cannabis as recently as 1973.

One day soon, police may be kicking in doors and searching basements, not for marijuana grow-ops, but for Internet servers broadcasting webpages about pot and other euphoric substances. They may also be seizing servers that broadcast pictures of the naked human form, or which simply inform people of their constitutional rights and freedoms.

Hawaiian hemp lawsuit

Hemp advocate Aaron Anderson continues his lawsuit against Hawaii County. Police seized 25 pounds of sterilized hempseed from Anderson in 1991, and charged him with possession of marijuana. The case ended in a hung jury.
After deputy prosecutor Kay Iopa stated in court that Anderson was charged because of his outspoken pro-pot views, Anderson launched a lawsuit against Iopa and the County for violating his civil rights.

In January, the judge ruled that Anderson would be allowed to include evidence of profits lost by his hemp business due to the police action.

The US labour department has agreed to ban "group strip searches" at Job Corps sites, after a lawsuit from a 1997 incident.
25 Job Corps workers were strip-searched in Colorado upon suspicion that pot was being smuggled into their barracks.

The US and UN are negotiating with Columbia to get agreement on using the Fusarium oxysporum fungus against coca plantations there. Chemical herbicides are already in widespread use, but the fungus is different because it spreads by itself, and it remains in the soil for many years.

Marijuana and MS

The journal Nature printed a study into the possible effects of marijuana on Multiple Sclerosis (MS). MS involves the body attacking its own myelin, the sheath that insulates nerves. This produces tremors, paralysis, loss of vision and pain. There is no known cure.
Six different synthetic cannabinoids were injected into mice with a condition similar to MS, and five of them reduced the rodents' tremors and spasticity.

Med-pot states

? Hawaii will likely join California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon and Alaska in approving marijuana for medicinal use. Two different bills allowing med-pot use were passed in mid-March, one by the Senate and one by the House. The bills will likely be combined into a single piece of legislation.
? A Minnessota bill to provide legal protection for med-pot users was voted down by the state Senate on March 3.

? Almost 70% of voters in Washington DC voted last year to allow med-pot use, but Congress blocked the measure from becoming law.

Industrial hemp got one step closer to being grown on New Zealand soil in January. The NZ Customs Minister approved a committee to "resolve differing opinions on industrial hemp."
The committee would likely include representatives from the police, Federated Farmers, the Hemp Industries' Association, scientists, and the Health and Commerce Ministries.

The city council in Augusta, Georgia is going to make having "drug paraphernalia" a crime within city limits. A chemical field-test would be used to determine the presence of drug residues: a special solution which turns blue when exposed to cocaine, and purple when in contact with marijuana.

A massive UK cannabis trial was dismissed in February, due to police and prosecutor incompetence.
Judge Crush blasted the prosecution's "cavalier attitude" and "culture of non-disclosure and non-compliance." He also criticized Kent cops for bribing a suspect to become an informant and failing to record evidence against police.
