Welcome to an expanded magazine, and the first issue of our special "New Zealand/Australia edition."
Initially our plan for the NZ/Australian edition was to add eight pages of content and ads which would only appear within copies sold in that region. But it seemed a shame that we were not sharing these great stories with our readers in North America and elsewhere.

Cleaning Chernobyl

The April New Scientist reported that the US company Phytotech and the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences continue to grow hemp in radioactive soil around Chernobyl.
After processing the plants, they obtained clean hemp fibre and plant remains rich in radioactive caesium. The contaminated remains are burned in a sealed incinerator that catches all the radioactive ash.

In the last eight months, Cannabis Culture published several articles describing potential legal and financial conflicts between High Times magazine, its parent company Trans-High Corporation (THC), and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML).

The US Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act, and its proposed censorship of drug information, has been receiving severe criticism in the media. The House version of the bill has been amended to remove the censorship provisions. Yet the bill remains very dangerous, and could also be passed in another form.

Hawaiian med-pot law

On June 14, Hawaiian Governor Ben Cayetano signed a bill to remove state-level criminal penalties against patients who grow and use marijuana with their doctor's approval.
Medical pot laws have been passed via referendum in seven states and the District of Columbia.

Hawaii is the first state where such a law was enacted by a state legislature.

My indoor garden is in the second week of flowering. The humidity in the room ranges between 65 and 75%. Is this too high? If so, how should I lower it?

Humidity in a flowering room should be kept below 55%. High humidity is harmful in at least two ways.

Jail, 30 years later

Allen and wife AmaliaAllen Richardson was extradited from Canada to the US in April, and ordered to complete a four-year 1971 sentence for selling $20 of LSD to an undercover New York cop. Richardson originally escaped from a prison work camp, after being told he was going to be returned to Attica, which had just had riots which left 43 inmates and hostages dead.

Long clones

Dear Ed,
I was a grower for a long time, but gave it up to travel for a while. When I got back my friend gave me clones from the genetics I gave him. The plants he gave me are rooted, but they are about eight inches long with no leaves except a little crown on top. Should I plant them only as deep as the plants are in the growing cube, or can I also bury part of the stem?

Malmo-Levine appeals conviction

David Malmo-Levine is appealing convictions on charges of trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking, related to the operation of his Vancouver Harm Reduction Club. His case was heard in the Supreme Court of BC on November 17 and 18, at the same time as Randy Caine's case.
Caine's case was the latest appeal in his massive constitutional challenge against siple possession. Caine was arrested for possession of less than a gram of cannabis in 1993.

Nicaraguan hemp nightmare

In December 1998, Canadian botanist Paul Wylie was jailed for growing hemp in Nicaragua. Wylie was the agricultural advisor for a Canadian company called Hemp-Agro, which was growing a 1400 acre tropical hemp test crop near Managua (see CC#17, Hemp Bust in Nicaragua).
During the raid, Hemp Agro's hemp field was burned by black-hooded government agents. Wylie was kidnapped in broad daylight and taken to prison.
