A drug which blocks the effects of cannabinoids is being studied as a treatment for obesity.
French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Synthelabo is studying a chemical which blocks neurons from accepting cannabinoids (a "cannabinoid receptor antagonist"). They have given their new chemical the trade name Rimonabant.

A study published in the July issue of the journal Gastroenterology found that the cannabinoid receptor system helps regulate "colon propulsion." The study showed that a natural endocannabinoid and another synthetic cannabinoid both inhibited colonic propulsion in mice. Conversely, a cannabinoid blocker produced "increased motility."

A study published in the August issue of the journal Nature showed that the brain's own endocannabinoids could be involved in helping to learn past painful memories.
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, studied genetically modified mice that had no CB1 cannabinoid receptor, along with mice who were given a CB1 receptor antagonist (which blocks the receptors).

On July 29, a National Guard helicopter on an anti-marijuana mission started a massive forest fire in California. The chopper pilot severed a power-line during a low-flying pot-patrol, sparking an inferno which burned over 61,000 acres and destroyed 150 buildings, including three dozen homes. The fire blazed for over three weeks, while over 3000 firefighters struggled to contain the inferno, at a cost of over $25 million.

I'm very new to growing. I started three healthy plants (two 12", one 22") in a simple hydro setup consisting of a drip system draining back to a tub filled with water and hydro nutrients. Germinating seed

What is the best way to germinate seeds? I've been successful at just putting them directly into the soil, but my friend was telling me that I should try putting them between two wet paper towels, keeping them wet until they sprout. He says that this way I would know which ones are sprouting before I plant them.
I've also heard that soaking them in a cup of water with a teaspoon of bleach added for one hour before planting was also a good method of starting seed. What do you think?

I have been growing intermittently for the past seven years. I have had a small percentage of hermaphrodites in nearly every crop. I have been told that it is due to the plants' environmental conditions, too much nitrogen, or breaking the light cycle, which I didn't do. Clones from mothers that I grew invariably had male flowers pop right out in the middle of beautiful nugs.

Police from the United Nations Mission in Kosovo recently detained and questioned the prioress of a Serbian Orthodox Church monastery, for suspicion of growing marijuana.

Canadian hemp cultivation company Kenex has launched a lawsuit against the US government, charging restraint of trade in violation of Chapter 11 of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Kenex had a large shipment of hemp seeds seized at the US border and held for four months between August to December 1999. Since then their products have repeatedly been seized or detained by US customs.
