I think this is absolutely ridiculous. All their reasons for prohibition get shot down and they come up with a new crazy claim to justify prohibition; when will this end. Doing the study is not a bad idea, if its going to be a just study. You should not have a religious group doing scientific tests, for all we know they are going to weave their religious beliefs into the study to justify why cannabis should be illegal. Could it not just be the fact that there are a very large percentage of people with mental health issues and a extremely large amount of people that use cannabis, and that some of these people with mental issues happen to smoke it. I think the study should be done but use scientists that base their findings on science not religion.

Considering how many people have smoked pot and for how long throughout history you would think there would be alot more data to support this horse shit. Just like the gateway theory, how many people use hard drugs? I don't think there is as many as pot smokers so there goes that idea. Reefer madness all over again.

The one study that they keep referring too was shaky on the one hand, and misrepresented drastically by the media on the other. The researcher who did it even said it was far from conclusive and that the link was probably from a tendency to self-medicate. So they're paying half a million dollars to spread a total lie and pretend they care about people's health. Since the bulk of that money will be spent on advertising in the mainstream media, the mainstream media will take the bias of the advertiser, as they usually do, and misrepresent anyone trying to question the doctrine.

Harper needs to be careful or the consensus my turn against his wishes and realize that legalization would go further to solve and protect the availability of marijuana from getting in to hands of non adults. Would that not drive Harper crazy?

I grew up with a lot of very normal cousins (4), and friends (6) here in Drayton Valley, Alberta. One by one as they turned 17 it was like a light switch went off, and either they would just seem to disappear or go missing. Later I would find out they had tried to commit suicide, or they ran away, or their parents had quietly taken them to seek help, for what would later be diagnosed as Bi Polar Disease. It wasn't later that I put together that the kids that had fallen victim to depression, and schizophrenia we the same friends and cousins I remembered being occasional, to heavy pot smokers. It is very hard to know if people are on anti depressants because it too embarrassing to admit, but as I get older it seems like 10% of the towns adult population is on anti depressants, and all most all of them will admit to smoking weed in their teens. Personally I think if your going to smoke weed it can be done safely after about 25 years of age, but an adolescent my be risking a lifetime of mental illness for a high that isn't worth the price.

Maybe one of these days someone should fund a study that checks into any correlation between religion and mental illness....

In actuality, it might increase the risk by some amount but certainly not the sevenfold figure given in the above article. The question is how bad it is compared to other things. You have to weight the possible risks of Cannabis use with the known benefits. It's like with pharmaceuticals, they all have a list of side effects as long as your arm but they are not prohibited. Well, Cannabis has the best benefit/side effects ratio of any pharmaceutically active substance. Until they prohibit every other substance that has any negative side effects, like aspirin or anything else in a drug store, they have no justification for prohibiting Cannabis and they know it. They can't keep up the charade forever. Eventually, they will have to actually uphold the Charter rights of all Canadians instead of arbitrarily denying them by making bogus arguments in Supreme Court that are easily shot down later but they can just say "the Supreme Court has made their decision, we control everything and we can do whatever we want just because we say so".

My studies with Marijuana use, and its growth have been favorable.
First I sowed the seeds naturally for the birds.
And then I sowed the seeds to make inroads into a system built on Money...As a young child, I didn't meet the social secutirty prereq for working status in the system.
So my only recourse was to sell Marijuana and do paper routes to exist in the system.
I then started using Marijuana, against my parents wishes, and the laws that bound them...

Now the lies have to stop.
Because I found when using this plant at first was benefical to my sound mind.
When the legality of it was emposed on me, by the Law, and the police, and then my parents...I was forced to split mty mind into two different entites.
One being Good...and the other being a rebel knowing that the penitly for having this plant, and selling it, or using it would be detramental to my welbeing uunder the law!

Paranoia was instilled because of the law, and the effect of the plants natural spiritual peace was lost over time knowing I was doing something that was supposedly wrong.

I'll stick with the opinion of medical professionals on this one. One must ask why after care practitioners are giving us so-called "medical" opinions and why should we care?

The problem these conservatives have is lack of intelligent knowledge. The only paranoia that comes from pot is the paranoia of getting caught for something everyone knows is so benign. It's probably the point of arrest where a marijuana user is treated like dirt that triggers schizophrenia. (hint-end prohibition)
And to think, it's tragic these narrowminded conservatives nearly got a majority government with less than 23% of the eligible voters (40% didn't vote). It's also ironic that probably the majority of the non-voters are probably pot smokers and that in itself may help these conservatives get a majority.

One of these days I would love to see these studies and organizations being run by actual SCIENTISTS (or at least doctors!)! There is more an more evidence that the relationship between humans and cannabis is mutually beneficial and long lived. I am sick and tired of politicians trying to convince people that use of marijuana is "bad". We KNOW BETTER!!! It has been shown to reduce the chances (and even fight) several forms of cancer. It has been demonstrated to be an excellent anti-depressant and non-toxic pain reliever.

Almost all alternatives to marijuana for these uses have been shown to induce side-effects that are often worse than the symptoms they are being taken to relieve. It leads me to believe that the only reasons marijuana isn't legal is that 1 you don't need a huge lab and thousands of hours of testing thus justifying sickningly high prices for meds, and 2 Using it HAS NEVER KILLED ANYONE!

My mother is dying of lung cancer to which cannabis might possibly have some relief, I'd like to see one Canadian dollar put towards researching that, let alone $550,000. But we are too busy trying to find a demon in a plant.
