In the clouds of smoke and sweet aroma of Arizona's best, the members of California's Slightly Stoopid cooled with me after sound check. Event staff were later to tell me that they smelled our interview from Tucson's City Limits Nightclub parking lot.

I have seen his face tattooed on a shoulder in London, and painted on a crumbling shanty wall on Jamaica's impoverished coastline.
His is an angular Jamaican face, framed by chestnut brown dreadlocks, forever young, frozen in fame's spotlight, shrouded in ganja smoke and nostalgia. His shy smile is sincere, but his eyes are shot through with Rastafari prophecy and pain.

In the Swiss Alps near Lucerne, Switzerland, acres of marijuana grow strong and tall in alpine sun. The colors of autumn are setting in, and the multiple varieties of cannabis I photographed there recently are putting on quite a show. Buds are deep purple, almost burgundy colored. Leaves are russet and gold. Resin crystals glow as nearby farmers harvest apples and make apple ciders.

In October of 1998 I took a two-day seminar at Simon Fraser University with Rinaldo Walcott ? transplanted Barbadian, author of "Black Like Who?" and professor of humanities at York University. Walcott knows his roots and cultural history. He is an engaging story-teller and teacher of personal memoir and family history, infusing his openness and charm into his work.
Walcott took time from his schedule to talk with me about the Caribbean, Rastafari, and hip-hop culture.

Last time I saw Cypress Hill was at Lottapoplooza's '95 Thunderbird Stadium, Vancouver show. Even before DJ Muggs and crew hit the stage for their much-anticipated set, the cops lined the top of the stadium, but kept their distance, knowing full well there isn't shit they can do about the ensuing smoke to be blown in their faces.

The day before she was to join her contemporaries at the "Divas in the Round" performance for New Music West, Kinnie Starr bicycled over to my house for some tea, certified organic fruit and conversation about her forthcoming debut for Mercury Records entitled "Mending" including her attempts at packaging the disc in hemp paper.
