Marijuana Could be NJ Farmers' New Crop

"We would all like to grow it because we think it would be a good cash crop -- literally," Fairfield nurseryman Roger Ruske said.

The New Jersey Farm Bureau, a trade group for agriculture, has looked into the issue in depth and found good news and problems with the idea.

New Jersey last month adopted a law allowing medical use of marijuana.

Wylie was working for the Canadian company Hemp-Agro in 1998, when armed government agents kidnapped him and threw him in prison, claiming that his low-THC outdoor hemp plantation was actually a marijuana grow operation.

Blocking pot's effects

<image0>The US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is developing a way to chemically block the effects of cannabis. A "cannabinoid receptor antagonist" with the poetic name of SR141716 has been shown to produce a dose-dependent block against toking up.
A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry detailed how 63 men received a dose of SR141716 or a placebo, and then smoked pot two hours later. The more SR141716 they received, the less the pot affected them.

The hemp was planted by Alex White Plume on his farm in May 2000. The Oglala Sioux Nation tribal council had passed an ordinance in July 1998 that authorized the growing of hemp with a THC level under 1% by weight.?White Plume said officers told him tests had confirmed that his plants held less than 1% THC.
