Hemp Legal in Oregon, Held Up By U.S. Law

Industrial hemp is legal in Oregon but growers say they can't get on with their business until the federal government change its policies.

The Oregon Legislature this year legalized industrial hemp, but Washington still classifies it as an illegal drug in the same category as marijuana, leading to little progress for the state's nascent industry, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Sunday.

For more than 70 years, possession of marijuana has been a crime in Canada. For most of that time, there were no exceptions for anyone using it for medical reasons.

At first, enforcement of that prohibition was sporadic. In the 1930s and 40s, there was an average of just one or two prosecutions a year. By the late 1960s, recreational marijuana use had grown to the point that hundreds, and eventually thousands of young Canadians a year were being introduced to the criminal justice system thanks to their use of pot.

LOUISVILLE, KY - On the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court limited the use of strip searches in the public schools, two young women filed an action in Jefferson County Court against a local middle school and several of its employees for using "grossly intrusive" methods to discover an alleged cache of marijuana. They were allegedly forced to unzip their pants, "lift up their bras ... and jump up and down."

Judge Arranges Sterilization as Part Woman's Probation For Pot

A Charleston woman agreed in Kanawha Circuit Court Monday to a judge's suggestion that she have her fallopian tubes tied as part of her probation.

Jessica Michelle Butterworth, 21, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana on March 23. At her sentencing hearing, Judge L.D. Egnor suspended a one- to five-year prison sentence in favor of five years of probation.

In 'jury nullification', a jury in a criminal case effectively nullifies a law by acquitting a defendant regardless of the weight of evidence against him or her. Until our national politicians show some backbone on the issue of marijuana law reform, it's one of the only ways to avoid imposing hideously cruel "mandatory minimum" penalties on marijuana users who don't deserve to go to prison.

Lawmaker Had Two Bags of Marijuana When Arrested

MADISON, Wisconsin - Rep. Jeff Wood had two bags of marijuana in his car and a 4-inch pipe to smoke the drugs when he was arrested for drunken driving, according to a Wisconsin State Police report released today.

State police reported one bag was 3 grams, while the other was 1.9 grams. The marijuana was found in the center console along with the pipe.

The arrest report adds detail to Wood’s arrest early Friday morning for drunken driving and drug possession.

Farmer Grew Cannabis To Escape Financial Hardship

Redruth, Cornwall, UK - A FARMER who faced financial ruin and the loss of his family business turned to growing cannabis on an industrial scale, a court has heard.

Cattle farmer Alfred Phillips suffered terrible financial losses from BSE and foot and mouth crises and could see no option other than setting up a cannabis farm, the court heard.

Phillips, from Scorrier, near Redruth, walked free on Friday along with his accomplice, Tony Kilmartin, from Falmouth, after both pleaded guilty to drug offences.
